Blackjack – also referred to as ‘twenty-one’ and ‘pontoon’ – is a card game that is often found in a casino with players trying their luck on achieving the elusive ‘twenty one’. It is commonly presumed that the game started in France through the 17th century. However, as with many other gambling games the exact development of the game remains a mystery.
Twenty-one was brought to the States following the French Revolution, but the game did not become popular in the gambling dens until the house offered bonus payouts. This was the only way that appeared to get players gambling on chemin de fer. One variant on the reward payout was for a gambler to make ‘21′ with the black jack card (valued at 10 points) and an ace (worth 11 points). With the increasing popularity of the game the pay outs were phased out but the name of the game ‘chemin de fer’ stayed.
Pontoon is not just about getting an outright ‘21′, but the primary challenge is to defeat the croupier without going ‘bust’. The betting house clearly has an advantage over the gambling players in the long run, but with twenty-one the gambler retains a bit of choice.
Since nineteen thirty one when America first approved wagering, twenty-one has grown into a quintessential casino game. Furthermore, it’s the blending of both ability and math employed in black jack that has made the game hugely liked. Chemin de fer provides an alluring proposition to any academic, mathematician or betting player wanting to research the tactic of the game.
